We’re swinging into the end of the 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour with a spotlight on a fan-favorite, Mattew Orum, a.k.a Matty O, whose recent victory at the MVP Open at Maple Hill was nothing short of poetic.

Let's take a flight down memory lane and see what’s shaped his 2023 season.

Matty O's Stellar Performance

Just a few days ago, the disc golf scene witnessed a majestic finish as the wild 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour season wrapped up its final DGPT Playoff event at the 2023 MVP Open at Maple Hill.

To say it lightly, Matty O’s triumph was years in the making, and now he’s in full momentum, teed up for the awaiting PDGA Major.

With a career-spanning over two decades, MattyO’s victory at Maple Hill wasn’t just a win; it was a testament to years of grinding, growing, and go-getting.

Our man birdied seven-straight on the back nine on that eventful Sunday, and with every sinking putt, the wave of emotions grew - both within the heart of our champ and amidst the roars of the spectators.

The chants of ‘Roll Tide’ and ‘MattyO’ became the melody of Maple Hill.

The crowd lost it when Matty’s upshot on the dicey 18th landed safely, the euphoria only magnified as he awaited the final card to complete their round.

And the eruption of joy when Matty O was crowned champion, well, that was decades of patience and perseverance encapsulated in a moment.

Early Days and Endearing Moments

Born and raised in the humble terrains of Mobile, Alabama, Matty had the privilege of growing up with a disc golf pro shop right in his backyard, thanks to his father.

A move to New Orleans at 19 enriched his personality and unveiled his love for dirty dive bars, giving us a glimpse of the fun-loving Matty we adore.

His sporting heroes aren’t far from ours.

Names like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady resonate in Matty's hall of inspiration.

Tiger’s game was more than just a Sunday evening watch for young Matt; it was a drive that saw him running between the TV and his backyard, from watching Tiger to emulating his putts.

2020: A Low, A Spark

The passing of Matty’s father in 2020 left a void.

The remedy, however, came in an unexpected form - watching Nikko Loccastro win the Preserve Championship rekindled the competitive spark within.

With the support of his girlfriend, who he met in the same year, Matty embarked on the journey back to the turf, a journey that his fans were eagerly awaiting.

The 2023 Season for Mattie O…

As Matty gears up for the last throw of this season - the USDGC, his eyes are set on more than just the wins.

It’s about building a legacy, much like his disc golf veteran hero, Cale Leviska.

If the MVP Open showed anything, it’s that Matty O has a knack for tackling the tough parts.

His journey is a blend of highs, lows, and steady ascends.

As he cruises through the 2023 season with three top-ten finishes already under his belt, the disc golf community is all eyes on what Matty O will pull off next.

The adventure is far from over, and Matty’s game is just heating up.
