But for those wanting to come out of the off-season with some new tricks, throwing into a net or practicing 30 foot putts is on the agenda…

…and then for those who are ready to take it to another level, it’s time to learn a new shot - the “Thumber”…

THIS WEEK’S SCOOP:

What The Heck is a “Thumber”?

This disc golf technique is both fascinating and, for some, a tad infuriating – the “Thumber” throw. 🌪️

🚀 The Thumber: A Disc Golf Arsenal Must-Have

The thumber is more than just an overhand throw; it's a game-changer.

It's the trick up the sleeve of ex-ballplayers and quarterbacks turned disc golfers.

Picture this: You're meticulously strategizing your every move on the course, and then someone effortlessly launches a 400-foot thumber.

Frustrating, right?

👍 The Thumber Grip Explained

The Correct Thumber Grip

For the uninitiated, here’s a quick lowdown on the thumber grip:

  • The thumb curls underneath the disc, gripping it tightly.

  • The other four fingers form a fist along the flight plate’s outer edge.

  • It’s like an outfielder’s throw to the home plate in baseball, but with a fairway or distance driver.

🌟 Why the Thumber is So Effective

The thumber’s impact lies in its simplicity and power.

With the right technique (and shoulder ligaments!), it becomes a relatively straightforward shot.

It's especially effective for right-handed players, creating a high, arcing trajectory that moves left to right before landing.

Jeremy Koling’s thumber is a prime example of this technique in action, showcasing minimal ground play and a perfect hit-and-stick finish.

💪 Thumber vs. Forehand Throw

While many disc golfers can effortlessly pull off a hyzer with a backhand, the forehand equivalent isn't as simple.

This is where the thumber comes in as a savior.

The motion is more familiar to many, akin to throwing a baseball or football.

Plus, the thumber's trajectory eats up a lot of power, making distance control less of an issue.

Did you know?

Thumbers, especially with discs like the Felon, Firebird, or Nuke OS, are surprisingly resilient against strong headwinds.

And if you're athletically inclined, a thumber can cover distances comparable to, or even surpassing, a solid backhand drive.

🥏 Throwing the Thumber: A Love Affair

There’s something about the thumber that's just irresistible.

Whether it’s the surprising distance it can cover, the minimal ground play, or the sheer fun of watching it soar – the thumber is a throw that every disc golfer should experience.

So, next time you're on the course, why not give the thumber a try? You might just find a new favorite throw in your disc golf arsenal.

Happy Throwing!

THIS WEEK’s PRO TIP:

Stop the “PULL”

Here’s another exclusive tip from Coach T at Slingshot Disc Golf - a holiday gift to elevate your game!

In this video, Coach T is on a mission to add 50 to 100 more feet to your throw, simply by correcting a common mistake: the wrong use of the arm.

🌀 The Mistake in Traditional Disc Golf Instruction

The conventional wisdom in disc golf has always been about reaching back and pulling in a straight line.

But here’s the twist: your arm needs to act like a whip, bending and unbending throughout the throw.

Keeping it in a straight line results in stiffness, limiting the wrist and elbow mobility crucial for that whip-like motion.

🌟 Coach T’s Revolutionary Approach

Coach T introduces a simple yet effective drill that will turn your arm into a whip, ensuring maximum mobility and spin.

Here's how it works:

  • Set up a V-shape with two sticks on the ground.

  • Start with your arm at a 90° angle and extend to the top of the V, eliminating shoulder use.

  • Practice throwing along this line, focusing on keeping your arm loose.

  • Gradually increase the angle, adding a little body turn to align your throws with the target.

💡 Why This Method Works

This technique emphasizes wrist and elbow mobility - the key to the 'whip tip' concept.

“Whip the Tip”

It encourages natural movement, helping you generate more spin and power without straining your shoulder.

🚀 From Practice to Perfection

With repetition, you’ll notice a significant improvement in spin and distance.

The goal is to feel the disc being whipped out of your hand, harnessing the true power of the slingshot method.

🥏 Parked and Perfect

As you master this technique, you'll start parking your shots closer to the target, with a noticeable increase in control and accuracy.

Coach T's method is a game-changer for both beginners and advanced players.

It’s time to leave behind the rigid, linear throws and embrace the fluidity and power of the slingshot method.
