The Secret To Disc Golf Mastery

...and which stable putter are you using?

Aces! Mel and I went to Tyler, TX this weekend.

We got to collect another wooded course…

I played with 2.5 discs - my 10 speed Musket fairway driver, and my 2 speed Keystone throwing/putting putter. The .5 part is where I borrowed Monster’s Slammer because I needed something in between the two!

Thanks Monster. We both played well.

We had lovely conditions and we were spending time with our fam that live here.

None the less, let’s get into it!

The Secret to Disc Golf Mastery: Less is More

Ever wondered what’s common among disc golfers, from touring professionals to weekend players?

A staggering collection of discs!

Yes, it's true that even those who hit the course casually often boast a vast arsenal of plastic wonders.

However, while the options are plenty, there's wisdom in simplicity, a strategy even the great Paul McBeth would nod in agreement with.

The Art of Selection: Your Disc Golf Workhorses

Here's a thought - carry as many discs as your heart desires, but pay close attention to the select few that consistently find their way into your play.

These faithful flyers are your “workhorse” discs, and they deserve the limelight.

It's simple: use them, and then use them some more.

Why? Because Familiarity Breeds Confidence

The act of accumulating a plethora of discs is not just a hobby; it's a temptation.

The temptation to leave these discs unused would be an oversight.

So, grab that putter, midrange, or driver, and let it fly.

Learning from the Pros: A Proven Strategy

Professional players demonstrate this principle beautifully:

  • Ricky Wysocki often drives with a Harp.

  • Nate Sexton elegantly maneuvers Firebirds through narrow paths.

  • Michael Johansen might as well have a Comet attached to his hand.

These pros have chosen their trusty molds, not as per the conventional use, but as per their intimate knowledge of the disc.

More Than Just Players, They’re Tacticians

James Conrad and his Envy. Aaron Gossage with his Zone. Bradley Williams and his beloved Pig.

These names echo a consistent theme: reliance on a chosen few.

The Outcome of Disc Loyalty

By emulating these seasoned players, you not only become familiar with your gear but also build an irreplaceable confidence in your game.

Comfort leads to consistency, consistency leads to fewer surprises, and that's precisely what you need when you step onto the tee.

The Takeaway

So here’s the approach: stick with what works, commit to your chosen discs, and venture out only when there’s an undeniable need.

This philosophy is not just for your disc selection but for life – focus on what serves you best, and give it your all.

May your next round be a testament to the power of simplicity and the strength of your 'workhorse' discs.

The Power Of Stable Putters

Unlocking your D.G. Potential

During a recent round with one of our coaches, I asked a question that many novices ponder: "What's the one thing a new disc golfer should focus on for the biggest improvement?"

Here’s the golden tip he shared:

Throw stable putters.

Why throw stable putters, I asked?

Here’s how he broke it down and why it’s so important to have one in your bag:

  1. “THROW”ing requires energy: When he says a “throwing” putter, he means throw with vigor - don't just putt with it.

  2. “STABLE”: Just that, a stable putter that maintains a straight flight with reliable fade.

  3. “PUTTERS” Mean Versatility: Putters are inherently controllable and adaptable.

He went on to share that throwing stable putters doesn't just help with accuracy; it’s a foundational skill that translates across your entire game.

Technique Insight from Andrew Marwede

Throwing stable putters with force provides immediate feedback on your technique.

Hyzer throw?

It'll hold that line.

Thrown flat?

Expect a straight flight with a gentle fade.

On an anhyzer line?

It should turn and glide nicely.

If the disc isn’t following orders, you know where the fault lies - with the thrower, not the disc.

Strategic Benefits: Straight-Line Mastery

Chris Dickerson highlights a scenario where stable putters shine:
the straight, 275-foot approach.

It’s a tricky shot that’s too far for a casual throw but too short for a full drive.

The solution?

A firm throw with a stable putter, which many seasoned players often undervalue.

Top Picks for Your Bag

Consider adding the P2 (pictured above), Aviar (pictured above), Wizard, and Warden to your arsenal for these kinds of throws.

For those who favor a slimmer profile, don’t overlook the Pure, Stud, and Tomb.

These discs are capable of delivering the performance needed, even if they don’t get the headlines.

The Practical Advice

Yes, keep those specialty putters like Pigs, Tactics, and Distortions handy for their unique roles.

However, make room for a true, stable-flying throwing putter.

It’s an investment that pays off in both the short and long game.

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, understanding and utilizing the humble stable putter is essential.

Make it a staple in your practice and watch as it transforms your game, one straight, decisive throw at a time.

Till next time, keep practicing, and remember - the secret to your next breakthrough might just be a stable putter away!
